The one secret no-one ever tells you about your diet…
The one secret no-one ever tells you about your diet…
Fibre.
The secret to being healthy, living longer and extraordinarily beautiful bowel habits isn’t found in garlic concoctions or celebrity juice cleanses
It’s found in the unassuming ‘superfood’, dietary fibre.
As a surgeon I’ve seen too many cases where a chronic lack of fibre has resulted in trouble - from piles (haemorrhoids), to anal fissures (tears to the lining of your back passage; yes ouch!) and diverticulitis (inflammation of the colon).
But fibre goes beyond bowels and digestion; a high consumption of fibre has been proven in research help ward off diseases like coronary artery disease, strokes, respiratory difficulties and even depression.
So when your grandma drank prune juice by the litre she was doing more than just keeping regular – she was actively helping her body successfully age.
But fibre goes one step further.
You probably realise that your food choices affect your digestion, weight, immunity – all aspects of your immediate and long-term physical health.
This is due to your gut ‘microbiome’; a fancy word that describes the trillions of microbes that live in your gut and the genetic material inside them.
These bugs interact with the body, the food you eat and with each other and send messages to the brain via the gut–brain axis (a.ka your 2nd brain).
These messages can strongly influence your mental wellbeing. If it’s healthy and happy? You are, too.
When your gut bugs are ‘happy’, they reduce inflammation throughout the body; this process is key to many serious complaints like insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure.
How do we help the bugs to flourish and stay happy? It’s pretty simple – feed them enough fibre!
