Why getting stuff wrong is sometimes right…
Whether you are still studying for exams, tests, learning a new language or how to code– life is one big learning curve. Here are 3 scientific study hacks that you need to know! The generation effect Tests are not great tools for evaluation but they are great tools for learning.What I actually mean by this is you should use tests to challenge your knowledge before learning any material. I know this seems counterintuitive! You will get answers wrong but it forces your brain to generate an answer, be more creative and you end up priming your neurology to better remember the answers & information. The reason this happens is closely linked to the hyper-correction effect where your brain is more likely to retain information from your mistakes to avoid them happening again.An evolutionary bonus skill. So test yourself early & often and don’t worry about mistakes! Spacing Practice your skills or continue your revision. Then wait long enough to almost forget…then practice again! This has been scientifically shown to improve long term memory retention. Interleaving Mix it up! Don’t study the same task or skill over and over again. Again, it seems counter-intuitive not to just focus on the one thing you need to do and the pace of learning may be frustrating but doing this ensures your brain learns broader skills instead of focusing on one specific task. Your brain has to make abstract generalisation making your knowledge more flexible and adaptable!
