What I'm Listening To...

I've always been a big fan of remixes. After all you could argue that nothing in life is an 'original' but simply a remix of things which have come before. To quote the famous English scientist Sir Isaac Newton "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants..." this is applicable in numerous subjects, from scientific concepts to works of literature and definitely in music! Did I just quote Isaac Newton to describe a Tame Impala song? Yes, I did! This song transports me back to the early 2000's even though Lil Yachty is as 2022 as you can get!

📜👑 A Quote That Made Me Introspect...

"Grief is the price we pay for love" Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II

Buddhist philosophy surmises that attachment leads to suffering. Yet the above quote tells us that when we love, we sign a contract to knowingly accept pain and that no matter how long and hard the grief is, it's a fair price to pay to have loved!

  Fun Fact...

Our bodies love making rocks! In your gallbladder you'll find gallstones. Your kidneys contain renal stones. Your pee pipes have ureteric stones, fecoliths can be found in your intestines. Even your bellybutton and has stones called omphaloliths! They are all hazardous to your health too, except for those good old ear rocks! Otoliths do a crucial job, they help with your balance and are part of the vestibular system!

Humans are weird things!

📺 What I'm Watching...

The House - Netflix

This stop motion anthology movie is something different. It's incredibly eerie and rather creepy but with an important message behind it. Many of the characters in this series of stories have obsessions which stem from a fireplace to sewing. It revolves around the pursuit of perfection and material wealth, which in turn distracts them from what is really important and they lose sight of what truly matters.

😊💭 What I've Been Thinking...

The negative bias. A cognitive bias or flawed thinking that is hardwired into our brains that make us pay greater attention to negative situations as apposed to positive ones. It's the reason we ruminate over single negative comments despite a sea of positive ones.

This is an evolutionary mechanism to make us pay special attention to threats. Understanding it is one step towards overcoming it!

🌎 A Discovery I'm Intrigued By...

Joy Milne, a retired Scottish nurse can basically smell Parkinson's!

She has something called hyperosmia, a heightened sense of smell and putting this superpower to use she has teamed up with scientists to develop a breakthrough three minute skin swab test that can pick up Parkinson's disease with 95% accuracy. Scientists believed that the scent may be caused by a chemical change in the oil's in the skin, known as sebum which is triggered by the disease.

This is ground breaking because up to now there have been no test for Parkinson's. But a confirmatory diagnosis would allow a person to get the right treatment and get the drugs that can help alleviate their symptoms earlier! I've done a video for this on TikTok which will help explain Joy's story and how she came to find out out her superpower!

As always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which of this weeks Sunday six is your favourite? Is there something you want more, or less of? I'm open to any suggestions so please let me know! Just send a  tweet to @drkaranrajan and use the hashtag #theweeklydose at the end so I can find it!

Have a wonderful week, all.

Much love,

Karan
