🛌🏽 This Blew My Mind About Rest...

Have you ever tried to fix burnout or lack of energy by getting sleep? Only to do so and still feel exhausted? If that's you, then here is a secret: Sleep and rest are not the same thing!

We often think we've rested because we have gotten enough sleep - but in reality, we are missing out on the other types of rest we so desperately need. The result is a culture of high-achieving, high-producing, chronically tired and chronically burned-out individuals.

We're suffering from a rest deficit because we underestimate the true power of rest.

Here is a video which explain the seven types of rest we need:

 📺 What I've Been Watching...

Human Playground - NetflixNarrated by Idris Elba, Incredible overview of the limits the human body can be pushed to and a look at dangerous traditional games and rites of passage that take place all over the world. A favourite series of mine right now!

🎧 What I've Been Listening To...

The Sickness Of Pont-Saint-Esprit... I am partial to a conspiracy theory. I mean, who doesn't love a good yarn?In 1951 a small French town became beset by an off sickness that caused hallucinations and convulsions. the working theory was Ergot poisoning via contaminated bread. That was until 2009 when another theory emerged. Was the CIA involved somehow? Is this another mind controlling experiment?

🤔 What I've Been Doing To Boost My Focus...

You may have seen on social media that I started working at a new hospital this week. Part of starting a new job means having to sit through hours of tedious, monotonous lectures about everything from health and safety procedures and the dreaded IT systems. As boring as they are, they are important and require full concentration. So, for when you find yourselves in such positions, here are a few tricks to help you survive the boredom.1. Be comfortable, by being comfortable your mind can focus better on the task at hand. If we are in an awkward position, we spent too much time trying to combat discomfort instead of concentrating. The same goes for when you're too full. Don't eat too much beforehand!2. Try and focus in short bursts. If you're sitting in a long lecture or presentation don't be afraid to ask for toilet breaks or drink breaks. Just five minutes away can help your mind refocus as well as improving our ability to remember what we've just been told.3. Crack a window. Fresh air helps us focus. If you're in a stuffy room just open a window, if that option isn't available, just step outside for a moment.4. I've mentioned this before, but chewing gum really helps you concentrate!

👨‍⚕️ What I Need To Tell You About Scrubs...

Apparently today is national scrubs day. Ever wondered why doctors wear blue or green scrubs as opposed to other colours?Scrubs actually used to be white, which was deemed the colour of cleanliness until early in the 20th century when doctors switched to green as they thought it would be easier on the surgeons' eyes whilst operating as green is the opposite of red on the colour spectrum. Green, or blue for that matter help refresh a person's vision of red things, especially important in the operating theatre! Although you may see doctors in a plethora of colours these days, you would usually see surgeons in green for this reason.

🦈 Fun Fact

You may have come across a compound called squalene in some of your skincare products. It is produced naturally by your body but as we get older our bodies don't create as much. Well did you know that this is also found in shark's livers, and this is where most of these products get it from. It can also be found in vaginal secretion but do with that piece of information as you please.

As always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which of this weeks Sunday six is your favourite? Is there something you want more, or less of? I'm open to any suggestions so please let me know! Just send a  tweet to @drkaranrajan and use the hashtag #theweeklydose at the end so I can find it!

Have a wonderful week, all.

Much love,

Karan
