Here is your weekly dose...
Hi all! Here is your weekly dose of the Sunday Six! A list of what I'm pondering and exploring. If you enjoy this please feel free to forward this to friends. families and enemies alike!**You'll find more in depth analysis of some of these subjects on my social platforms in the links just below, including Dr Karan Investigates! for deep dives into interesting topics on my YouTube channel.**
What I'm Reading...
Last week I set out a goal to read one book a week for leisure. Well, I perhaps bit off more than I could chew. Working 60 hours a week as well as everything else a regular person has to consider (sleeping, eating, commuting etc) means it just wasn't feasible. But the habit of reading won't be lost on me! It may have taken me a little longer to read however I was still able to incorporate an important aspect into my life.
📚
So please take something from this little 'experiment'. Habits are important, especially ones we can appreciate and enjoy. We don't need to set ourselves timelines for everything though. If I hadn't embarked on the journey of reading then I suppose that would constitute a failure. But I read the book (eventually), I enjoyed my time reading and therefore only positives come from this.
I've already chosen my next read: The Ape Understood The Universe by Steve Stewart-Williams. I'll share my thoughts on this with you when I finish it!
A Day I Celebrated...
This week (3rd Sept) we celebrated World Beard Day. Since the beginning of time the beard has been a sign of manliness. The beard would represent virtues such as strength, wisdom and even social standing in some cultures.
🧔
Although seen as more of a fashion symbol these days. I have nothing but respect for the people who can pull off a clean-shaven face. Perhaps because I turn into a 14-year-old boy without my beard, but I see my whiskers as a part of me now and think it's a noticeable feature that I couldn't bear to lose. So it is nice to have a day dedicated to the facial peach fuzz.
I did a video on the benefits of having a beard that fits perfectly with this day -
A Quote I Enjoyed...
"If we didn't do everything we weren't supposed to, we'd hardly do anything at all"
Nori Brandyfoot - Lord Of The Rings, Rings Of Power
📜🖋️
Generally, our lives are governed by a set of rules that fit society or fit the role that we play in society. There are also those 'rules' we impose on ourselves, whether to try and make ourselves better people or again to help ourselves fit into society. The reason we feel many things are unfathomable or that we are unable to do is due, in part, to our own perceived limitations. One example that sticks with me is people telling me that a surgeon shouldn't be on social media. It is safe to say I don't listen to these opinions...
A Life Choice I'm Considering...
⏲️
Constantly changing our sleep schedule to fit around shifts is detrimental to our health. Our circadian cycle is an essential biological practice our body runs off. By disrupting our natural sleeping pattern both our mental and physical health are at risk. Shift work has been linked to increased risks of sleep problems, as well as being responsible for occupational and driving accidents as well as longer term health issues.
Something I Found Interesting...
You may have seen some pictures of a
doing the rounds on Twitter these last couple of days and the affect using sunscreen had on her skin. For 40 years this woman applied UV-protection sunscreen to her face but neglected to apply any to her neck. The difference between the two areas is fascinating (check the photos in the link above). Clinical examinations have revealed a significant difference in the solar damage done to her neck compared to her face.
☀️
It is also worth knowing that sunscreen actually protects against wrinkles and not just skin cancer! Now, it may be the end of summer but that doesn't mean we should neglect our SPF skin care.
First of all, what is SPF and what does it actually mean? SPF quite simply stands for Sun Protection Factor. If your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying an SPF 15 sunscreen would allow you to stay in the sun without burning for approximately 150 minutes (a factor of 15 times longer).
Contrary to popular belief people with darker skin NEED sunscreen. No skin type in immune to cellular damage from the big laser in the sky!
And finally, does sunscreen limit our bodies ability to absorb vitamin D? Even if you wore SPF50 perfectly it only blocks 98% of UVB rays... What gets through is more than enough to help you produce vitamin D!
What I'm Watching...
Most Hated Man On The Internet - Netflix
This three-part series delves into the story of Hunter Moore who set up a website based solely on sharing stolen and hacked photos, and the repeated failed attempts to take the site down. The worrying concept of revenge porn was the intention behind this act.
📺
The human mind with all its wondrous capabilities is capable of genius as well as pure malice. I can't even begin to fathom the chronic psychological damage and PTSD that revenge porn can cause to a person. Not an easy watch by any means!
As always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which of this week's Sunday six is your favourite? Is there something you want more, or less of? I'm open to any suggestions so please let me know! Just send a tweet to @drkaranrajan and use the hashtag #theweeklydose at the end so I can find it!
Have a wonderful week, all.
Much love,
Karan
